Why Technology Directors Are Turning To Refurbished Computers
School district technology directors have a lot on their plates. As we all know, computers are vital tools for learning these days, so technology directors play a major role in ensuring that students get the education they need. A supply of computers is no longer simply one component of an educational program – more and more it encompasses many aspects of education. It is in front of computer monitors and projection screens, with laptops or with tablets in hand, that our children evolve into the bright leaders of the future.
But technology comes at a price. In many parts of America, that price tag puts a lot of pressure on the shrinking technology budgets. As Scott Owen, the technology director of Alma school district in Michigan, puts it: “I operate in an area that’s pretty tight economically. We’ve lost a lot of jobs here, especially in manufacturing, and a couple other large employers. My job is to find a way of getting the best technology into the schools without having to rely on loans or technology bonds. We have a replacement schedule that requires a constant and consistent influx of new technology.”
Like many district technology directors, Mr. Owen has realized that his money goes a lot further with refurbished technology than it does from buying new. As opposed to the $500-$700 (and up) price range with new computers, refurbished computers can come in under $200. And make no mistake, though the computers have been previously owned, Mr. Owen insists that these refurbished computers are in “like-new” condition.
